An Overview of My Family Law Practice
At the Law Office of Vimala D. Nowlis, in Century City, I emphasize high-level personal service and attention to detail when representing clients, both men and women, throughout Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley in family law matters. I left a law firm to open my own practice in 2002 so that I could be an attorney who devotes my full attention to every client. Before practicing law, I held senior management positions with several California child support services agencies, where I worked closely with legislators and effectively with government and private lawyers. Besides having a J.D. with Distinction, I also have an MBA — and was my class' Salutatorian. I also have a B.A. in Communications and went through several mediation and negotiation programs.

Divorce and Property Settlement
I work closely with every client at all stages of a divorce, from the pre-separation planning to the decision to file, after separation and before the divorce, through negotiations and trial, to post-judgment modifications or the enforcement of court orders. I handle all matters related to or arising out of divorce, including contested and uncontested divorce issues, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support or alimony, and property division. Child Custody and Visitation
I will help you negotiate and put into place custody and visitation agreements that promote the best interests of your children while protecting your rights as parents. I will make certain the needs of your children, such as education, medical requirements, religious matters, cultural issues, and other personal concerns, are factored into custody and visitation decisions. Child Support and Spousal Support
I will work with you to arrive at a child support order that is in compliance with California guidelines. I will also work with you to determine your spousal support order is in compliance with the California standard. To learn more, see my page on Child Support and Spousal Support.
Prenuptial and Postnuptial Agreements
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure or a pound of flesh." I work with my clients, men and women, who are planning to get married or are already married, who have concerns about property issues and their legal rights and obligations, and I help them prepare and execute prenuptial or postnuptial agreements. Paternity
I also handle cases where a parent is seeking to establish the correct paternity of a child. By taking a simple cheek swab for a DNA test, the child's father can be determined, allowing child support and child custody arrangements to be properly made.
Domestic Violence/Restraining Orders
My office provides assistance to clients dealing with domestic violence and attempting to obtain restraining orders. This can be a difficult process where support and guidance is needed. I can help seek the modification of any family court orders that may need to be amended due to the domestic violence issues.
